Signs a Child or Adult May Need a Speech and Language Assessment

Learn the common signs that may indicate a child or adult could benefit from a professional speech and language assessment.

When Is a Communication Difference Worth Checking?

Parents frequently ask whether their child’s speech will improve naturally or whether professional assessment is required.

Not every speech difference requires therapy. Young children naturally make some errors while learning to communicate.

The important questions are whether the difficulty is persistent, whether it is appropriate for the person’s age and whether it affects everyday communication.

Signs Parents May Notice in Children

Parents may become concerned when a child is consistently difficult for other people to understand, frequently substitutes or omits sounds, becomes frustrated when communicating, has difficulty forming sentences, struggles to understand instructions or appears to have unusual fluency or voice characteristics.

Some children may speak clearly but still have difficulty understanding language, organising sentences, telling stories or participating appropriately in conversation.

This is why assessment should consider communication as a whole rather than pronunciation alone.

What About Adults?

Speech-language difficulties can also occur in adults.

Some adults may have communication difficulties that have existed for many years. Others may develop new difficulties after illness, injury or neurological conditions.

Concerns may involve speech clarity, motor-speech control, fluency, voice, language or the ability to communicate effectively in daily life.

A speech-language professional can assess the nature and functional impact of the difficulty and determine whether therapy or further referral is appropriate.

Sudden Changes Require Medical Attention

A sudden change in speech or language should not simply be booked as a routine therapy appointment.

If speech difficulty appears suddenly—particularly alongside facial weakness, weakness of an arm or leg, confusion, severe headache, loss of balance or other acute symptoms—urgent medical assessment is important.

Why Hearing Should Be Considered

Hearing and communication development are closely related.

A child who does not have consistent access to certain speech sounds may experience difficulty learning those sounds accurately.

Adults with hearing loss may also notice changes in everyday communication.

Depending on the presenting concern, a hearing assessment may therefore be recommended as part of the broader evaluation.

What Happens During Assessment?

Assessment varies according to age and symptoms.

A clinician may observe conversation, play and social interaction; evaluate speech sounds; assess understanding and expression of language; examine fluency and voice; or ask the individual to complete structured communication activities.

The purpose is not simply to count mistakes. Assessment aims to understand the pattern, severity and everyday impact of the communication difficulty.

An assessment also does not automatically mean long-term therapy will be recommended.

Sometimes it provides reassurance. Sometimes home guidance or monitoring is sufficient. In other situations, structured intervention may be beneficial.
